About Abtenau
Imagine a typical Austrian alpine village nestled in a sunlit valley, surrounded by snow covered mountains 2,000 feet (700 metres) above sea level. The peaceful village of Abtenau is only 30 minutes from the centre of Salzburg and a convenient ten minutes drive off the motorway, yet it feels like another world, climbing up a winding pass into the hills, offering glimpses of the Lammertal River’s deep ravines and alpine pastures and the breathtaking panoramas of the Tennen Mountains and the high Dachstein glaciers. It is in this inspirational environment , your body, spirit and soul can be recharged.
Abtenau itself offers a variety of activities whatever the season, such as rafting, canyoning, hiking, para-gliding, hang- gliding, mountain – biking, summer and winter tobogganing, on/off-piste and cross country skiing, as well as numerous restaurants, cafes and shops.
Another 30 minutes drive over the Postalm high pastures opens up a world of crystal clear lakes and forests of the Salzkammergut, Austria’s premier lake district, with lakes such as Wolfgangsee, and Hallstattersee, providing opportunities to swim, windsurf, sail and sunbathe.
The Salzkammergut area also has a rich cultural heritage which includes the nineteenth century town of Bad Ischl, not only the famous spa and hunting resort of Emperor Franz-Josef but the home of operetta, made famous by Franz Lehar, the Andrew Lloyd Webber of the 1900s. A month long festival of concerts is run here throughout August. Abtenau is ideally placed to access both the Salzburg and Bad Ischl music festivals, just a 30 minute drive to both.
